Things you should avoid while in Langkawi.

In the excitement travelling in Langkawi, there are some things you need to know, so that your visit to Langkawi will be more meaningful and do not experience the painful memories. Here I would like to remind the tourists to remain vigilant and concerned about the 10 items listed below.

1) Self-Drive Car Rental
Many tourists coming to Langkawi like to rent self-drive car rental in which it is a very practical method for sightseeing in Langkawi. Tourists who rent self-drive car rental can move freely at the appropriate time as compared to hiring a taxi for a sightseeing. However, I want to remind you to only deal with self-drive car rental company or travel agency that only provides a valid self-drive rental vehicles . Although the travel agency has a valid license, that does not mean self-drive car rental service they provide have a valid permit. This is very important to make sure you do not have problems with the authorities. To ensure that the vehicle you hire has a valid permit, make sure that there are two stickers on the windscreen of the vehicle which is a road tax and another one is 'Hire and Drive' from the Road & Transport Department of Malaysia.

2) Water Sports at Chenang Beach
Water sports is like a must for visitors to Langkawi. Among the most popular location for water sports activities are Chenang Beach and Tengah Beach. I would like to remind you to only deal with the counter of the water-sports center. Do not deal and make payments to the beach boys wandering around the beach to get customers. There are many cases of fraud that occur on tourists by beach boys who are not honest. I remember the incident that happened to a couple of Middle Eastern countries that are dealing with a beach boy and had to pay to rent a jet ski. Beach boy asked them to take turns in one place, after they waited for a while, they were asked to the water sports center counter, then they realize that they have been duped.

3) A Biting Monkey
Various locations around Langkawi such as Bat Cave, the Seven Wells Waterfall, Temurun Waterfall, Durian Perangin Waterfall and along the Telaga Harbour road (in front of the Petronas petrol station) there were many monkeys around and waiting for tourists to give them free food. This has become a habit, every day, many tourists visit to these places and accidentally give them food. You are advised not to feed these monkeys. This is because, given food that is not part of their diet is not good for their health and will cause them to lose their nature due to being dependent on food provided by humans. What is more worrying, this monkey behavior is quite unpredictable, especially the male monkey who is the head of a monkey group. Male monkeys who became head of the group are often large and aggressive which is likely to bite if you do not give food that is in your hands. Therefore, it is better not to feed the monkeys in order to avoid untoward incidents occur.

4) Danger at Seven Wells Waterfall
Seven Wells Waterfall is one of the interesting locations to visit, especially when the rainy season in Langkawi. There are seven natural pools surrounded by tropical rainforest. The height of this waterfall as high as 80 meters with the scenery, you can also see the Langkawi Cable Car from the top of the waterfall. If you come here, I advise you to be careful at the peak of the waterfall and always follow the instructions provided by the signs. There are several waterfalls around the area with a mossy stones thereof, and very slippery, if you are not careful enough accidents may occur. There are several cases involving death from a fall from the top of the waterfall. Once again I advise you to be careful and always follow the instructions provided by the signs.

5) Buy tour package from a legal service counters
If you want to take a trip to the islands or any other tours, preferably you order and make payment over the travel counter or legal service counters. For example, if you want to take a Mangrove Tour trip, you can book the tour at the counters available in the hotel lobby or even counter service available at the jetty where boats discharge. Make sure you see the price tags on display and make sure the services offered, such as duration and places to be visited are included in package price.

6) Buffalo at night
If you are driving at night, I advise you to be cautious if you passing through the dark streets, particularly near rice fields. This is because there are many buffalo that roam around the street near the rice fields and rural villages. These buffalo will be crossing the road and can cause accidents. Therefore, I advise you to be careful driving at night to avoid an accident.

7) Do not drink and drive
Langkawi is a duty free island, so some items are very inexpensive when compared to other places in Malaysia, among which is the liquor and beer. Liquor and beer prices in Langkawi is very-very cheap and the purity is guaranteed . There are many entertainment centers around Langkawi for you to enjoy at night. It is not an offense for you to enjoy, however, I advise you not to drive to places of entertainment. It is better if you go and back to the hotel by taxi. There are many accidents caused by drunk drivers in Langkawi .

8) Make sure you do not have illegal drugs
If you enter Langkawi by ferry from Temelang in Satun, Southern Thailand make sure you do not have illegal drugs. The penalty for drug offenses in Malaysia is heavy, sentenced to death for drug trafficking is still practiced.

9) Say no to "Eagles Feeding"
Eagles feeding activity is very popular in Langkawi. Virtually every tourist who comes to Langkawi will be participating in a package, which is an eagle feeding activity. Among them is a Mangrove Tour and Island Hoping. When you join this tour, the boat skipper will give chicken skin as a food to the eagles in order to attract eagles come close to the boat. No doubt it was very exciting to see the eagles fly so close to you. However, given chicken skin to the eagles every day is very bad for the health of the eagles. Therefore, I suggest that you do not support the eagles feeding and if you take that trip, please tell the skipper of the boat not to feed the eagles. Enough to witness many eagles around the area.

10) Catch and release
if you join a fishing trip, make sure you practice catch and release, especially for small fish. Often when you join a fishing trip, you will catch small fish, mostly less than 1 kilo. I advise you to release it in order to conserve the marine life. Take picture!! even if the fish is small, it is more meaningful.

Europcar brings Charteau back to Malaysian roads of glory.

The overall winner of the 2007 Le Tour de Langkawi, Frenchman Anthony Charteau will be back to Malaysia after four years of absence. He’ll lead Team Europcar to a new challenge following their brilliant ride at the Tour de France last year with Thomas Voeckler wearing the yellow jersey in the mountains and Pierre Rolland winning the white jersey of best young rider in Paris.

“Le Tour de Langkawi has a special place in my heart”, said Charteau who was underestimated by the favorites in 2007 when he broke away to claim the victory in stage 3 to the Cameron Highlands. He defended his lead with great courage in Genting Highlands and proved later on to be a real climber as he won the King of the Mountain price of the 2010 Tour de France.

For two years, he rode for Caisse d’Epargne, but to his displeasure the Spanish team couldn’t line up at Le Tour de Langkawi. Back to his roots with Bbox Bouygues Telecom, now renamed Europcar, he won the Tour of Gabon back to back in the past two years, which kept him away from Malaysia. “But I’ve always wanted to ride Le Tour de Langkawi again despite the long trip from France”, Charteau said.

Yohann Gene had the same feeling after winning the last stage in Dataran Merdeka, Kuala Lumpur, in 2009. “Malaysia has the same kind of hot and humid climate as Guadeloupe where I come from”, said the 30 year old who became the first Frenchman from the Caribbean Islands to take part in the Tour de France last year.

Gene might be the lead out man for Europcar’s Italian recruit Matteo Pelucchi who is the team’s new sprinter from Italy. The French team also comes to Malaysia with a specialist of time trial, Jérome Cousin, and one of the country’s most promising riders, the 2008 European champion for the U23 road race Cyril Gautier who has been a member of the successful Tour de France team alongside Voeckler and Charteau in the past two years.

“The love affair between Jean-René Bernaudeau’s team and Le Tour de Langkawi is a long-living one”, commented the chief operating officer Emir Abdul Jalal. “They came as an amateur team called Vendée U to the very first LTdL back in 1996 and they returned in 2000 as soon as

they became a professional team under the name of Bonjour. Their very first pro win was stage 3 of Le Tour de Langkawi from Taiping to Sitiawan with Damien Nazon twelve years ago! We appreciate very much how faithful they are to our country and we strongly hope to see them
perform again this time around.”

sanctioned by the UCI and UCI Asia Tour. LTdL 2012 is expected to feature 22 professional teams.

The 10 day race begins on February 24 with Individual time trial along a 20.3 km course in Putrajaya to kick off the race; followed by stage 2 Putrajaya – Melaka (151.0km); Stage 3 Ayer Keroh – Parit Sulong (187.6km); Batu Pahat – Muar (169.4km); Ayer Keroh – Pandan Indah (190km); Proton Shah Alam – Genting Highlands (108km); Bentong – Kuantan (205.8km); Pekan - Chukai (100.8km); Kemasik – Kuala Terengganu (165.7km) dan Tasik Kenyir – Kuala Terengganu (114.8km).

15th Asian Sailing Championships In Langkawi

Racing at the 15th Asian Sailing Championships 2012 gets underway on 16 February through until 25 February 2012. Teams from 24 nations in Asia will gather in Langkawi, Malaysia ready to do battle for the 14 classes in Asian Championship titles.Organized by the Malaysia Yachting Association and Asian Sailing Federation, the Asian Sailing Championships will match hot favorites alongside relative newcomers to the class. To be eligible to compete, all sailors must be members of their National Federation.The 9th KFC Langkawi International Regatta Perdana 2012, which is scheduled during 08 February to 12 February 2012, will be an initial indicator of form and includes representatives from more than 13 nations. More than 240 sailors have confirmed their entry for this event.With most of the racers competing at the LIRP 2012, and with a few more days of training and race course familiarity under their belts, there is any number of teams who will be leading the fleet and challenging for Asian Sailing Championship glory."Nine years ago, in 2003, Langkawi played host to its first International Regatta. Looking down the results leader board from the 2003, many of those names are now well known international sailors. Dr Mahathir proposes Langkawi for Malaysia Open!!

KUALA LUMPUR: Former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, the patron of this year's BMW Malaysia Open, met event partners at a luncheon hosted by tournament organiser, Carbon Worldwide, last week.

BMW Malaysia managing director Geoffrey Briscoe, tournament director Keld Kristiansen and Lawn Tennis Association of Malaysia president Tan Sri Abdul Razak Latiff, were among the guests.

Dr Mahathir also presented signed framed certificates of appreciation to sponsors.

At the function, Dr Mahathir mooted the idea to move next year's edition to Langkawi.

"The tennis event will, in a way, further promote Langkawi as one of the nation's premium tourist destinations," said Dr. Mahathir.

"Organising the event on the island will definitely draw a lot of attention together with the Tour De Langkawi."

Asked on whether he played the game, Mahathir jokingly said he hadn't touched a tennis racquet for almost 70 years.

"I will do whatever I can as patron of the tournament," he added.

Briscoe said: "We are delighted to have Dr. Mahathir on board as patron and his support will augur well for the success of the tournament."

The Malaysia Open, a US$220,000 (RM 677,270) event, will be held at the Bukit Kiara Equestrian and Country Resort on Feb 27-March 4.

Among the confirmed names in the 32-player singles draw are former World No 1 Venus Williams, Australia's defending champion Jelena Dokic, France's World No 9 Marion Bartoli, China's Peng Shuai and India's Sania Mirza.

There are many seafood restaurants scattered around the main island. Chenang Beach, Tengah Beach and Kuah Town is popular for it's fresh seafood restaurants. However, in your enthusiasm to enjoy the seafood of your dreams, I would like to advise you of some things you should know before you visit the restaurant of your choice.

Prevent yourself from the delusion of seafood on display live in an aquarium placed in front of the restaurant. Among the live seafood on display is as lobsters, groupers, crabs, tiger prawns, oysters and other things. Prices for live seafood is more expensive than the dead seafood. Although expensive, many people would want to try a live seafood. If you choose to enjoy live seafood , evasion yourself from the trick! seafood restaurant owners who are not honest will change the live seafood you have selected with the dead one. For those of you who rarely eat seafood you will not be able to distinguish when it is cooked.

To prevent you from defrauded by restaurant operators who are not honest, I advise you to select only seafood that has died. Actually, not much difference between the live seafood and the dead one. There are many interesting places in Langkawi that you can visit, most of these places can be visited by hiring a taxi, self drive car hire, rent bikes or participate in tour packages offered by travel agencies. There are also some activities that require you to rent a boat. Among the interesting places to visit which I suggest are Cabel Car, Mangrove Tour, Island Hoping, Payar Island Marine Park, Mahsuri Tomb, Chenang Beach-water sports, Eagle Square, Fishing Trip, Day Cruise & Sunset Cruise and Chenang Beach-night bazaar. However, there are many other interesting places that you can visit.

MANGROVE TOUR
Mangrove tour is the activity that you should not miss while in Langkawi. You will be taken to places of interest during this visit such as Bat Cave, Crocodile Cave, Floating Fish Farm and eagle feeding.

LANGKAWI CABLE CAR & SKY BRIDGE

Langkawi Cable Car and Sky Bridge is a very worthwhile places to visit. By using the Cable Car, it will take you to the top of Mount Mat Chincang with the height of 2000 feet. Langkawi Sky Bridge is one of the highest suspension bridge in the world.

PAYAR ISLAND MARINE PARK
This marine park is the only one located on the western side of Peninsular Malaysia and the only marine park with a floating platform in Southeast Asia. There are several tour operators that offer snorkelling and scuba diving packages to this marine park.

ISLAND HOPING

Island hoping is a visit to three islands by boat, these islands are 'Pulau Singa', 'Pulau Beras Basah' and 'Pulau Dayang Bunting'. This trip takes about 3 hours. The most interesting is a visit to 'Dayang Bunting Lake', located in 'Pulau Dayang Bunting'. This lake is a freshwater lake even though the border to the sea is only about 5 meters.

CHENANG BEACH - WATER SPORTS

Chenang Beach is one of the most beautiful beaches in Langkawi, it is facing the andaman sea and has a very beautiful sunset. Here we have some water sports operators offering several types of water sports such as para sailing, jet ski, banana boat, wind surfing, water ski and others. If you want to have fun with water sports, I suggest you come to Chenang Beach because they are less expensive than hotels.

MAHSURI TOMB

This mausoleum is located in 'Kampung Mawat'. In this village where mahsuri lived until she was sentenced to death for having defamed with other man in the absence of her husband. Before Mahsuri's death, she cursed Langkawi will not be safe for seven generations. The curse is over now, some people believe Langkawi has developed due to Mahsuri curse has ended. Come visit the Mahsuri Tomb to find out more about the story of Mahsuri.

CHENANG BEACH- NIGHT BAZAAR

Lately, bazaar located along the coastal road of Chenang Beach has become a tourist attraction. This bazaar consists of a row of shops and stalls that sell a variety of souvenirs. Seafood restaurants are also abundant here, the seafood in this restaurants is very fresh. This is because seafood such as fishs, prawns, mussels and crabs are the result of the local fishermen catch. There are also imported seafood such as lobsters and oysters. Cafe and Bar are also commonly found in Chenang Beach , most are owned by foreign nationals residing in Langkawi.

SUNSET CRUISE & DAY CRUISE
Sunset cruise and day cruise is one of my most recommended activities. This is because most of us rarely have the opportunity to board the luxury yacht. Sure this will give good memories during your holiday in Langkawi, especially if you come for your honeymoon.

FISHING TRIP

Fishing is my favorite activity when I was in Langkawi. Indeed, the island of Langkawi is one of the most popular fishing spot among local anglers. There are many fishing locations you can go fishing and catch your first fish even if you do not have any fishing experience. This is because the government often make artificial reefs around the waters of Langkawi for fish breeding. If you bring your kids, I'm sure they will have fun too.

EAGLE SQUARE

Eagle Square is one of the landmarks of Langkawi that welcomes visitors arriving by ferry. It is located near the ferry terminal. Because the word Langkawi which means eagle, the government has built a statue of an eagle as a symbol and landmark of Langkawi. The best time to visit the Eagle Square is at sunset, you will be able to record the views of the beautiful background of the eagle and the sunset.

If your hobby is fishing, maybe you can consider Langkawi as one of your fishing destination. Whether you come with family or friends, Langkawi is a fishing location you should visit. No matter whether you prefer to use lures or live bait, there are many fishing locations you can explore. I personally prefer using lures when fishing in Langkawi , one of my favorite lures when casting is Rapala XRap Xtreme Action Slashbait 10cm. These lures have never disappointed me and it is a perfect lure if you are targeting GT , often I get more fish than my friends who use other lures.

Rapala Xrap orange color as in this picture is my favorite color, I often use this color from other colors. My other favorite colors is purple, pink and white. Surface lures are also good to use, especially when the water is calm, but nothing could match the power of Rapala Xrap. It can be used during calm or choppy water. If you are targeting grouper or fish that live on the sea bed, my suggestion is to use Rapala Xrap Deep Diving or use a Jig for jigging if the water is deeper.

There are many fishing locations in Langkawi, you will need a chartered boat to go fishing at this location. Among the sites I frequently visit are Tanjung Rhu, Pulau Dangli, Teluk Datai, Tama, Pulau Timun, Pulau Kentut Kecil, Genting, Pulau Cepu, Pulau Jong, Gok Seribu, Tukun Takat, Kapal Karam, Tuas Teriang and Tukun Batik. There are also a relatively remote location for fishing and require you to stay in the boat for a night. These fishing spot are Pulau Perak, Tukun Kapal 145 and Tukun Jenahak.

If you are fishing around Langkawi by using lures, it is sufficient to use a light or medium set with a braided line not more than 30pn. You need a heavier set if your go to the remote location I mentioned earlier. But remember to change the treble hook to a stronger one, anglers often missed a big fish due to the broken treble hook. Night Market is a market that opened during the late afternoon until evening, and is only opened once a week only in certain places. For people around the night market held, usually they would go to the night market to buy all kinds of food and consumer goods. There are a variety of goods and local food available at night markets of which are clothing, footwear, perfume, traditional medicine, cakes, toys, fruits, vegetables, seafood, meat, groceries and many others.

If you come to Kuala Lumpur, do visit the night market at Jalan TAR. This is the best night market for you to visit during your stay in Kuala Lumpur. Open as early as 4 pm to 10 pm, this night market is about 500 meters long. Even if you just want to wander and experience being at the night market, I suggest you try a taste of local food. There are many food stalls along this night market.During my visit here, I have had the opportunity to try out 'Laksa'. Honestly it is the most delicious 'Laksa' I've ever eat.

For the people of Langkawi, 'Kerabu Beronok' is no stranger, it is kind of special food you eat with your family during a casual lunch or dinner. It is also a special meal during gatherings or wedding feast. Maybe lot of us may not have heard about 'Beronok', a type of sea cucumber found only in the waters of Langkawi. 'Beronok' however not be available at all times because it is seasonal.

To get 'Beronok', you need to go down to the mud during low tide, there are only a few locations left to get 'Beronok'. This is due to the rapid development in Pulau Langkawi, many coastal areas that are the habitat for 'Beronok' has been reclaimed. Normally, finding beronok be done in groups and families relaxing activity during leisure. There is also a 'Beronok' seekers who do this activity as a livelihood. When searching Beronok, often seekers for 'Beronok' will get cockles. These sea creatures embedded in the mud about one to two feet, you need to use your hands to rummage out. 'Beronok' goodies are still young, the elderly are little bit tough and it can be eaten raw.
